Saturday afternoon the 'Varsity nine played its second game with the Williams college team, and this time succeeded in defeating it in a close, though not especially exciting contest. The nine was deprived of the services of Captain Willard, who was away, but McKean '90, who covered first base in his stead, played a very creditable game both at the bat and in the field. The home team played remarkably well in the field. The out fielders were slow in fielding the ball in, but the work of the infield was good. Much of the credit of winning the game belongs to Downer, who struck out fourteen men. At times he seemed to lose partial control of the ball, but he was finely supported by Henshaw throughout the whole game. The batting of the team was weak. After the first inning only three hits were made, one of these being a scratch. This is a deplorably poor showing. Most of the men were slow in starting for first base, and when on bases, were slow in starting off.
Williams played a good game. Wilson pitched well and Clark played a beautiful game behind the bat. His throwing to bases was one of the features of the game.
Williams was first at the bat and scored one run, on two singles, a sacrifice, and Evans' fumble in centre field. Harvard, in her half, scored two runs. The first four men at the bat made safe hits, and Howland and McKean both scored, one of the runs being earned. Dean scored for Harvard in the third inning, on a base on balls, a steal, and two sacrifices. He scored again in the fifth, on another base on bal's, a sacrifice and a wild pitch. Williams got her second run in the fifth inning when two hits a base on balls, and Cummings' fumble allowed Wilson to reach the plate. In the fourth inning, Dean, McKean, and Henshaw made a pretty double play at second base and the home plate. The score:
