The annual competition for the Boylston Prizes for Declamation" occurred last evening in Sanders Theatre.
It was a quarter of eight o'clock, when the first speaker, W. R. Bigelow, was announced. He spoke in a very agreeable manner, but evidently felt the disadvantages of being the first speaker. W. E. B. DuBois delivered Grattan's 'Invective against Mr. Flood' in an effective manner. His gesticulation was particularly good. H. E. Burton spoke in an easy dignified manner, which left the impression of considerable reserve power. The next speaker, A. S. Wicks, caught the spirit of Webster's "Against Secession." but his voice lacked the power to give it adequate expression. C. M. Thayer gave an intelligent, but not very forcible rendering of Hoar's "The Ordinances of 1787." W. L. Monro, who followed him, delivered Mrs. Runcie's "Anselmo the Priest." a piece which calls for considerable dramatic ability; his rendering of it was an excellent effort. W. H. Warren spoke Henry Clay's, "The Greek Revolution," in a remarkably intelligent manner. He thoroughly entered into the sarcastically indignant spirit of the oration, and gave it an almost perfect expression. After an intermission of five minutes, C. G. Morgan spoke Carl Schurz's oration on "The Emancipation Proclamation." He spoke with a little too much deliberation, but otherwise his delivery was admirable. T. Woodbury's powerful voice, and commanding presence were admirably adapted to the delivery of one of Rufus Choate's orations. C. W. Luck spoke well and deserved the prize he won. The efforts of R. J. Cary, H. H. Darling, and J. L. Alder, were very excellent; all spoke easily, and with some power. The judges were E. W. Hooper, Esq., T. J. Coolidge, Esq., Samuel Hoar, Esq., Rev. E. H. Hall, Rev. G. A. Gordon, Professor F. G. Peabody, Professor L. B. R. Briggs, Messrs. Keener, W. R. Thayer, and Sumichrast. They awarded the first prizes to W. H. Warren and C. G. Morgan; the second prizes were given to W. E. B. DuBois, T. Woodbury and C. W. Luck, The award gave general satisfaction.
