After many unsuccessful efforts, during recent years, a lacrosse team has finally been organized at the University of Pennsylvania, and the large number of experienced players now in the university gives promise of a successful start.
The Brown University Baseball team will open the season April 27, with the Wesleyans at Providence. May 14 the club will go on a trip, playing Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, St. Johns at Fordham, N. Y. and Columbia.
The candidates for the Yale university tug-of-war team met last Saturday in the gymnasium. Only five men presented themselves. Watrous, L. S.; Billman, Hosmer, H. Webster and R. Morris, all of '92. The men met yesterday and began regular training.
The chairs of the Edinburgh Medical faculty are each worth $17,000 a year. The professorships at Glasgow in Greek Latin and Mathematics are each worth about $9,000 yearly. These figures suggest the propriety at least of increased salaries in American colleges.
A member of the Amherst faculty has subscribed $25 to help pay for a trainer for all the athletic teams, and has promised seventy-five more if the college will supply the remainder. It is proposed to give him a recognized voice in the department of physical culture.
Attendance at recitations is optional at Cornell, Michigan and Johns Hopkins. At Amherst and Wesleyan nineteenths of the recitations must be attended. At Yale eighteen cuts are allowed sophomores and freshmen and twenty-four to seniors and juniors. At Dartmouth twenty-five cuts are allowed and at Williams thirty.
