The regular weekly service was held yesterday afternoon in Appleton Chapel. The choir opened the services with Gounod's anthem for men's voices, "Sanctus." Dr. F. G. Peabody conducted the responsive service, after which Hill's anthem, "I Will Lay Me Down," was sung by the choir.
Dr. McKenzie read as the lesson the sixteenth chapter of Hebrews. He said that nothing is more inspiring in the character of Abraham than his sublime faith. He then spoke of the reasonableness of our faith in God and what it means to us in this life and the life to come. So far from making us dissatisfied with the life here and long for the joys of the heavenly home, the truly-balanced mind will be affected just the other way, for faith teaches us that the life yonder has its beginning here, and everything to which we look forward there has its beginning here. The well balanced mind sees in the duties, the opportunities of life here, the joys and privileges of heaven, and goes forward as did Abraham seeking a country of its own.
At the close of Dr. McKenzie's remarks, the soloist of the evening, Mr. G. W. Want, sang Mendelssohn's "If with all Your Hearts."
