NEW HAVEN, Feb. 19.- The present term is one of close application for all members of the university, both scholars and athletes. As for gaieties, they are few and far between, and are only the annual banquets of the school and state clubs. The first annual banquet of the Exeter Club was enlivened by the presence of Professor Cilley of the academy, who was the guest of the club on that evening. Tonight the Chicago Club has its supper.

An effort was recently made by the junior class to have the restrictions in regard to writing for the junior exhibition removed by the faculty so that the whole class, or at least all on the appointment list, could write; and a petition to that effect signed by forty-five out of the fifty eligible men has been presented to the faculty, but no action has been taken as yet.

The recent banquet at Delmonico's in celebration of the great successes of the university in its athletic undertakings proved to be a very happy event, not only because of its nature, but it afforded an excellent opportunity to present the need for much better gymnasium facilities. Winners of first places in the intercollegiate games, and members of the nine, crew and eleven were present.

The number of candidates for the crew has, by a series of dismissals, been reduced to sixteen. About the first of March the men will go to a training table, when the number will be reduced to twelve. Neither Carter, '88, S., Gill, '89, nor Corbin, '89, will row in this year's crew. As a matter of fact the crew will be made up of men who have had little experience in the University boat. Carter does a great deal of the coaching while the men are at work in the tank. In regard to the stroke oar of the boat nothing can be said at present; Caldwell may or may not stroke again. The recent newspaper account of the affair was a matter of complete surprise to the whole university.

All the base-ball men are hard at work, the candidates being numerous and faithful in practice; but the one great question is, who will succeed Stagg in the pitcher's box?
