We are very sorry to hear of the lack of willingness on the part of a good many men to support the University crew. Many who can afford to give to the crew, not only refuse to do so, but take occasion to express dissatisfaction that after the defeats in the past few years, they should be expected to take any interest in the crew.
It seems to us that these men are acting very disloyally to their college, and must do so from thoughtlessness. It is true that in the past few years Harvard has been unlucky and Yale has won the victories. But just because of this, there is every reason why rowing men should make greater efforts, and why the college should all the more heartily give them its support. The crew has done its part, has gone to work with a zeal and determination never shown before, but there is a disposition among some inconsiderate men, who think it their part to stand aloof and sneer at the earnest but unsuccessful efforts in the past, to refuse the money which is absolutely necessary.
Perhaps some men do not know the large amount of money needed by the crew, and cannot appreciate that without this amount of money victory is hopeless. The fact is that this year the crew is in need of an unusually large amount of money. A new launch is an absolute necessity, for without it the crew can receive no proper coaching; the tank, although built with the utmost economy, cost several hundred dollars; and a new shell must be bought. Thanks to last year's management, the crew is out of debt, but the expenses this year will be more than double those of last year. In view of the urgent needs of the crew we ask every man to give as much as he possibly can to its support.
