Play in the annual half tennis tournament began promptly yesterday morning on Jarvis courts at 10.15, and was kept up with short intervals all day long, so that the preliminary and first rounds were both played off. The playing was on the whole very good, and a number of students witnessed the different matches.
The following are the results of yesterday's play:
Preliminary Round.- Manchester beat R. K. Thomas; Lee beat Howard, 6-2, 6-3; Hale beat R. D. Brown, 6-4, 7-5; S. W. Stugis beat R. W. Nutter, 6-4, 6-1; J. S Codman beat Rheinlander by default; Burlingham beat F. S. Blake, 6-5, 2-6, 6- ; Wildes beat H. A. Davis, 6-1, 6-1; J. A. Stetson beat C. C. Baldwin, 6-0, 6-1; W. D. Orcutt beat A. H. Lockett, 6-4, 6-4; H. Tallant beat H. S. Potter, 6-4,8-6.
First Round.- Jennings beat W. F. Baker, 6-1, 6-0; Lee beat Hale, 6-3, 6-3; Sturgis beat J. S. Codman, 6-4. 6-2; Wildes beat Burlingham, 6-3, 7-5; Stetson beat Orcutt, 6-1, 6-3; Tallant beat Wrenn, 6-1,6-0; A. M. Chase beat B. T. Whitehouse, 3-6,6-3. 6-3. Second Round.- Stetson beat Wildes, 6-3, 6-3.
Play in the doubles will begin this afternoon at two o'clock. All contestants must be present at that time unless they have made previous arrangements with their opponents. The drawings resulted as follows :
Prelminary round.- Hale and Stetscnvs. Kingsley and Wildes. Firstround - Orcutt and Potter Vs Brown and Sturgis; Howard and Blake Vs Lee and Tallant. Winners of preliminary round vs. Goodwin and Livingston; Wrenn and Lockett Vs Thomas and Baldwin.
