The handicap meeting of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, held last Saturday in the Madison Square Garden, N. Y., was, without doubt, in all respects the most successful athletic meeting ever held in this country. Representatives from all the well-known athletic clubs, together with numerous college athletes, took part in the games, and the large number of entries-about 700-made it necessary to hold the preliminary heats in the afternoon from two to six, and the finals from eight till near midnight. A few innovations were made, as lacrosse and base-ball games were played under cover for the first time. The H. A. A. did not send down any representatives. However, two men, Stead, '91, and Lee, '91, went down on their own account, but failed to win. Yale sent quite a number of entries, but all failed to win excepting Shearman, who won the high jump at 5 ft. 9 in. with 1 in. handicap. Only one record was broken. George R. Gray, N. Y. A. C., threw the 24b.- shot 33 ft., 3 in., breaking the record by 8 inches. The lacrosse game between the Staten Island Athletic Club and Rutgers College consisted of two halves of fifteen minutes, and resulted in favor of the Athletic Club. Score 3 to 0. In the foot-ball game the University of Pennsylvania defeated Rutgers College, by a score of 10 to 1.
The winners in other events were: Dohm, Princeton, 440 yards; Luseson, Pastime Athletic Club, 75 yards; Doane, P. A. C., 880 yards; Donovan, P. A. C., 220 yards; Girinni, N. Y. A. C., standing broad jump; William Morris, Y. M. C. A. of Philadelphia. half-mile and mile runs; Varuna Boat Club, tug-of-war.
