Professor C. L. Smith has resumed his duties as dean of the college.

Students who have handed in elective lists and wish to change them must wait until October 3rd.

Professor Chaplin is now chairman of the Parietal Committee, vice Professor C. J. White, resigned.

Dr. Barnard has tendered his resignation as president of Columbia College.

Yale '92 has adopted the following euphonious yell: "Bric-a-kex-kex,coax, coax, bric-a-kex-kex, coax, coax, whuop, whu-op, whu-up, parabaloo-'92."

Yale, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Wesleyan and Rutgers have opened with largely increased freshman classes.

The postmaster requests that all students, new or old, leave their addresses at the post-office where blanks will be furnished for the purpose. This will aid the carriers and insure every student against mistake in delivery.

There is an interesting article by John Addison Porter on "College Fraternities" in the September number of the Century. Among the illustrations is a very fair engraving of the new building of the Hasty Pudding Club.

Yale, in giving the number of men in her freshman class, includes members of '92 in the Sheffield Scientific School. Counting the number of students in the college proper, the number in the entering class will be reduced by about one fourth.

Twenty judges of the Supreme Court were graduates of Amherst.

The examinations for admission to the Law School and for advanced standing began yesterday and will continue today and tomorrow. Examinations in Civil Procedure, French and German will be held at 9 o'clock, and in Criminal Law at 3 o'clock today, in Torts at 9 o'clock tomorrow.

Active measures are being taken to secure the safety of students in case of fire. For each room above the second story a coil of rope will be provided, with one end fastened to a hook attached to a staple. The coil will rest upon a handle and will be kept in place by a strap, so that it will at all times be ready for instant service.

Semitic courses for 1888-89 will begin as follows: Hebrew I, Friday, Sept. 28, in Sever 9, at 3 p.m.; Hebrew II., Tuesday, October 2, in Sever 7, at 2 p.m.; Arabic I, Monday, Oct. 1, in Sever 7, at 2 p.m.; Arabic II, Oct. 1, in Sever 7, at 3 p.m.; Assyrian I, Thursday, Sept. 27th, in Sever 9, at 12 m., and Assyrian II, Saturday, Sept. 29th, in Sever 9, at 11 a.m. Students desiring to take any other Semitic courses should consult the instructors at their homes, or at the times and places above named.

Special students may find their advisers at the times and places named below: Prof. Chaplin, Lawrence Scientific School Building 8, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 3 to 5 p.m.; Prof. Hart, Hollis 7, Thursday and Friday, 2 to 4 p.m.; Prof Shaler, University 9, Thursday, 3 to 6 p.m.; Friday, 3 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 to 12 a.m.; Prof. Taussig, University 13, Thursday, 2.30 to 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 to 12 a.m.; Prof. Wendell, Grays 18, Friday, 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Prof. Wright, Sever 26, Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, 12 to 1 p.m. A list of assignments of special students to their advisers is posted on the bulletin board in University Hall, south entry. Each student is required to confer with his adviser at once.
