Work at the Gymnasium.

The winter meetings are close at hand, and in consequence the gymnasium is crowded every afternoon. The number of candidates for the University and freshman nines has not changed, and the exercise remains the same-base-sliding, hand-ball and running. Yesterday, for the first time, the run of the University candidates was made out of doors. The wrestling class still continues, and many men are practicing on the rings and the parallel and horizontal bars. The work of the University and the class crews is unchanged, and the candidates for the Mott Haven team jump, vault and go through the dumb-bell exercise. The sprinters, for a short run, take advantage of the cinder sidewalk which extends from the gymnasium to North Avenue. Noble, '88, and Slade, '90, are training for the hurdle race this year, and it is possible that Capt. Lund will also enter in this event. The tug-of-war men are hard at work, but the '90 team is the only one which is yet finally made up. It will consist of R. Jones, E. E. Jones, Piper and Amory (anchor). It is slightly over-weight, but will have no difficulty in training down the few requisite pounds. Its chief weakness is in dropping, and it is doubtful whether any improvement is shown over last year's team in this respect. The probable make-up of the '88 team will be Pease, Baldwin, Chase and Balch, although Balch is now unable to pull on account of illness. Out of about seven candidates for the '89 team, Marquand, Raymond, Endicott and Perry will probably be selected. There are about eight freshmen trying for positions on their team, and the final make-up is yet doubtful. Higgins, Tallant and Fitzhugh are the candidates for anchor.
