Third Winter Meeting.

The third winter meeting of the H. A. A. last Saturday, was a very successful one. The attendance was good but there was not such a jam as to render it uncomfortable. The events went off with considerable snap and vigor and the meeting closed before anyone had a chance to be bored at the sameness which the various feats must have in a meeting of this sort. The performance began with work on the horizontal bar: C. A. Goeble, '88; G. L. Barney, '90; F. B. Myers, '90; and J. B. Henderson, '91, gave a very good exhibition. Henderson carried off the honors and was pronounced the winner of the event. Pennypacker, '88, now tried to break his record of 37 ft. 9 1-2 in, at putting the shot. He make some very good puts, only one out of the six being less than considerably over 37 feet. The best was 39 ft. 5 3-1 in. G. L. Barney, '90, and R. S. Bell, '91, alone showed up for the high jump. Barney withdrew after jumping 4 ft. 9 1-2 in.; Bell continued, winning finally at 5 ft. 2 1-2 in. C. E. Curry, '89, had a walkover in the rope-climbing. Although considerably hampered by the safety rope, attached to his waist, he made the ascent in 21 1-2 sec., coming quite close to the record. The high kick brought out E. E. Buckingham, L. S., and R. B. Hale, '91. Buckingham could not touch the disk at 8 ft. 6 3-4 in., and Hale at the following height. Hale thus took the event with a kick of 8 ft. 6 3-4 in. The flying rings was the next event. M. F. Pillsbury, 89; M. D. Hull, '89; Barney, '90; Myers, '90, and Henderson, '91, were the contestants. Pillsbury was given first place and Hull second. The tumbling was well done. After some very creditable work, Myers dropped out, leaving Barney and Henderson to work for first place. The judges were unable to tell which was the best man, therefore they called it a tie, saying Barney was the more proficient in somersaults but Henderson the better in connected work. H. L. Phillips, Gr., did some fine club swinging. This event was very "taking," and it seemed a pity that there were no more entries. Barney, '90; Myers, '90; Henderson, '91, and B. C. Stevenson, Sp., next did some spring-board leaping. The meeting now ended as usual with the tug-of-war-'88 vs. '90. Eighty-eight had the south end. She was represented by E. A. Pease, No. 1; C. H. Baldwin, No. 2; P. Chase, No. 3, and F. G. Balch, anchor. The '90 team was R. Jones, No. 1; E. S. Jones, No. 2; L. A. Piper, No. 3, and A. Amory, anchor. The tug was close. Both teams dropped at the same time, the rope remaining in exactly the middle. At one minute, '88 had won 1-4 in,; she kept on gaining very slowly, however, winning at last by 4 1-2 in. The officers of the meeting were: Referee, Mr. G. B. Morrison, '83; judges, Mr. C. H. Kip, '83, and Mr. A. T. Dudley, '87.
