This evening those men now at Harvard who have graduated from Phillips Andover Academy will hold a dinner at the Parker House. The object of this dinner is to give those men who have recently entered college an opportunity of meeting and of becoming acquainted with the upperclass men; and also to show those students now at Andover who are as yet undecided as to which college they shall go to complete their education, that here at Harvard, they will find pleasant acquaintances, and agreeable surroundings. We comment upon this dinner because we believe it to be a step in the right direction; a step which will tend to bring those men to Harvard whom we must have if we desire to reach that standard which we have set up for ourselves.
By this dinner, the Andover men in college will establish a precedent which we hope will be followed by the representatives here in college of all the other large preparatory schools Men who have come from Phillips Exeter, in particular, ought to be doing something to further the interests of Harvard in their academy. For a long time Exeter was the great feeding school of Harvard, but during the past few years the Exeter delegation has decreased in number to a great extent and simply because the Exeter men in other colleges have offered to their hesitating brethren what seemed to be greater advantages than are to be found among us. We understand fully how zealous every Harvard man is to help his college but we also know that a little well directed energy will accomplish more than any amount of well-intentioned talk which does not completely persuade.
