The championship game between Pennsylvania and Wesleyan took place on the morning of Thanksgiving day at the Polo grounds in New York. Three thousand people were present. The teams were as follows:
Pennsylvania.- Zeigler, Bowser, Savage, Dewey, Sypher, Wagenhurst, Cash; quarter-back, Church; half-backs, Hulme and Colladay: full-back, Hill.
Wesleyan.- Crane, Gibson, Eaton, Gardiner, Heath, Glenn, Floy; quarter-back, Opdyke; half-backs, McDonald and Manchester; full-back Slayback.
The game was called at 2.30 p. m. It was a hard fight from the begining. Hulme rushed the ball but gained little; Wagenhurst gained twenty yards. The ball was passed to Hill, who punted. and in the scrimmage for the ball, Wagenhurst was knocked senseless; but after a few minutes' rest, took his place again. Slayback made a rush for Wesleyan but lost the ball. Hill tried to punt but the kick was blocked and Wesleyan got the ball. By several rushes Wesleyan gain forty yards. McDonald now punted to Pennsylvania's thirty-yard line. Pennsylvania got the ball, and rushes by Hulmes and Colladay carried it to Wesleyan's twenty-five-yard line. Another rush by Colladay gained 10 yards. The ball went to Wesleyan on four downs. Slayback fumbled and Cash and Zeigler carried the ball in goal, making the first touchdown for Pennsylvania. Hill kicked the goal. Score, Pennsylvania, 6; Wesleyan, 0. The ball was again put into play and kept at Wesleyan's forty-yard line. Manchester was hurt in tackling Hulme, but kept at his work. They play now became very rough; Wagenhurst and Crane were hurt, and Manchester retired, Clark taking his place. At the end of the first half the score stood as above. When the game was again called Hulme made a good rush, carrying the ball to Wesleyan's twenty-yard line. After a great deal of punting by both sides, Wesleyan got the ball, and Slayback rushed through the whole Pennsylvania team scoring a touchdown. He then kicked a goal. Score, 6 to 6. Again the game became rough, and Gardiner was hurt, being obliged to retire. Cash soon made another touchdown. No goal. Wesleyan was soon forced to make a touchdown for safety. Just before the end of the game, a touchdown and goal by Pennsylvania made the fin scoreal 18-6.
