Yale Letter.

NEW HAVEN, OCT. 29, 1888.

After the usual time spent in preparation for the work of a new year, the college has settled down to its usual term-time appearance, with, however, a much larger number of students than ever before in its history. The freshman class in the undergraduate departments alone, has 335 members, while the graduate departments show a decided increase. This is very noticeable in the case of the Law and Medical schools, whose outlook for the future is unusually bright and encouraging.

The musical organizations are laying out plenty of work for this season. The University Glee and Banjo clubs will take an extensive tour through the west, while the Apollo Glee and Banjo clubs will visit the southern states. The orchestra does not contemplate any long trip, but will give concerts in the neighboring towns.

At the annual meeting of the Yale Athletic Association held last week, T. F. Bayard, Jr., '90, was elected president, and F. C. Walcott, '91, secretary and treasurer. The association has a good balance on hand, though the outlay for the past year has been heavy. Several attempts have been made to hold the regular autumn hare and hounds runs, but so far, the days appointed have turned out very wet and muddy, and it has been necessary to postpone them.

Candidates for the University crew are already at work. They are as follows: Hartwell, '89 S; Harrison, '90; James, '90; Newell, '90; Rogers, '90 S; Aiken, '91; Allen, '91; Brewster, '91; and Isham, '91. The nuembers will be largely increased after the football season, when the regular winter training in the gymnasium will be begun.

The Yale Athletic Association has planned a series of Wednesday and Saturday afternoon runs, to be held when the weather permits. At the end of the season a prize will be offered to the winner of an open race which is to be between five and ten miles loag. It is thought that in this way the interest will be kept up in wheeling, for last year the bicycle club existed in little more than name.

The Yale Banner, one of our illustrated annuals, is now in course of preparation and will appear shortly. The editor will spare no pains to make it larger and more complete than ever before.
