There will be a total eclipse of the moon on the 28th of this month, visible in this latitude and longitude, and unless cloudy weather shuts out the phenomenon, it will be an interesting and profoundly impressive sight. The moon is full at 6.35 p. m. on that day. The eclipse begins at 4.30 p. m., but its total phase does not commence until 5.31. The middle of the eclips is reached at 6.20, and the total phase ends at 7.09, but the earth's shadow does not entirely clear the lunar disc until 8.09 1-2.
The candidates for the college and freshman nines at Amherst are doing regular work in pitching and catching in the cage, batting in the old gymnasium, and general exercises in the new gymnasium. The men who are training for the New England Intercollegiate meeting at Hartford are also working steadily, and are feeling pretty confident of bringing the championship to Amherst this year. Last year Amherst men took four first and ten second prizes, a larger total than was made by Dartmouth in getting the championship. Six first prizes made Dartmouth win. Only one of the men Amherst sent to Hartford last spring has left college, and to the number remaining several new and strong candidates have been added. Dr. Hitch-cock, the gymnasium instructor, has contributed $50 towards engaging an instructor for the three or four weeks just previous to the meeting.- Ex.
