In giving the diplomas Wednesday for the Institute of Technology graduates, General Walker declared that these certificates meant what they said, and that there was no academic fiction about the coveted testimonials to years of hard and patient work.

In old times, men who barely scraped through college got the same diploma as the real students. This was the fiction General Walker doubtless had in mind. Colleges and similar institutions have now raised their standard so that a diploma means something.

Nevertheless, what with examination crams and such little games, there is some of this fiction left.-Record.
