EDITORS DAILY CRIMSON:- I desire to correct a statement contained in the report of the Harvard Union meeting which was published in yesterday's edition of the CRIMSON. It was there stated that "the defeated candidates intend to contest the legality of the whole election." Now there were no "defeated candidates" at the meeting last night, for both the vice-president and myself publicly withdrew our names from candidacy a fortnight ago, and had not the slightest intention of allowing them to be so used under any circumstances; nor were any other candidates nominated either by myself or any of my friends.

The legality of the election is denied be a large proportion of the members on the ground that nearly one-third of those present and voting were not members of the Union. None of these gentlemen had paid any dues for a period varying from two to four years; not a single one of these had signed the new constitution, and many of them, by their admission, had not even signed the old one. It was a knowledge of this fact which induced me to take such a decided stand in refusing to read my report to the meeting. I regarded myself as having been elected by the Union to perform certain duties in connection with its meetings, and had I yielded to the dictation of a body of men who did not legally constitute the Union, I should have fallen painfully short of the performance of that duty. As secretary and treasurer of the Society I have now in my possession both its documents and its funds. However unpleasant it may prove to be, I shall regard it as my duty to retain possession of the property which has been entrusted to me until my successor has been legally elected.
