The following is the result of the singles played yesterday: Round 1 - MacKay beat Sturgis, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Round 3 - Tailer beat Zerega, 6-3, 2-6, 8-6. The results of the doubles will be played to-morrow.
The series of class prayer-meetings, which has been held during this term will be brought to a close by a general meeting for members of all classes, at which Rev. Phillips Brooks and Prof. Peabody will be present and take part. Friday evening, at 7 o'clock, in Holden chapel.
N. H. 4. - Fifth excursion. May 27, to Nantasket. Take steamboat from Rowe's wharf, Atlantic avenue, Boston at 2.10 p.m. Boat returning leaves Nantasket at 6.15 p.m. The instructor will meet the Wednesday section at Nantasket, the other section in Boston. This is the last regular excursion of the year.
In final trials made during the past week by the Mott Haven team, 1-4 mile straightaway, S. G. Wells made it in 48 seconds, Endicott beat Hardy and Sturgis in 51 1-2, Hardy second by 4 yds., Sturgis 2 yds, in rear of second. Half-mile, Dana beat Endicott and Davenport in Holmes field, time 23 1-5. In broad jump, Cogswell won with 20 ft., 10 1-2 in., Gibson, second with 20 ft. 1 inch.
The second meeting of the Massachusetts Chess Association will be held on Decoration Day, May 30th at 10 a.m., at the rooms of the Boston Chess Club, which have been kindly offered for the occasion. There will be a handicap-tournament, with the players divided into four classes according to their strength; with five prizes, awarded to the five players having the highest scores. Play in this tournament will begin promptly at 11 a.m., after which time no entries will be allowed. Those interested in chess throughout the state are invited to join this association, and, if desirous of entering this tournament, should send their names at once to the secretary, 33 Pemberton square, Boston; membership fee, $1.00.
