Too great praise cannot be accorded the action of the Overseers and Corporation last January, when they abolished the office of Secretary of the College, and substituted therefor that of Secretary of the University. The increased powers connected with the new office and the wisdom of the change have been made apparent in the management of petitions for absence and in other ways, but what we particularly wish to notice, is the prospect for helping students in their efforts to obtain a livelihood during the summer months, and further in finding permanent situations for men who are about to leave the University. The college authorities have always done what they could in aiding graduates to get positions as teachers, but now the system has been extended so as to embrace all members of the University and all occupations. Any student whether he wishes to enter the ranks of journalists or of lawyers, or whether he wishes to obtain a situation as a salesman or as a book-keeper, or if he merely desires any work which will help him to earn his living, will receive now, by application to the secretary, the kindest consideration, and in all probability a situation will be awaiting him before many days.
Such an admirable arrangement as the above will do much to put an end to the stories of college graduates who in their misery and want bemoan the years "they wasted at college." When a corporation of the strength and vitality of Harvard University takes hold of a matter some striking results are inevitable. If the students in need of situations and the employers in need of men take advantage of the offer which has been made a mutual gain cannot fail to result.
To Mr. Bolles, who, we believe is the originator of the project and on whom the burden of the labor will fall, we extend, although unbidden, the heart-felt thanks of the students, for we believe that were public opinion capable of expressing itself as one man it would call upon some one to perform that very duty which we have taken upon ourselves.
