A fair-sized audience assembled on Holmes Saturday afternoon to witness the annual spring sports. A cold east wind interfered seriously with the contests, and it is greatly to the credit of the men that three of the records were so nearly broken. Cogswell's time in the half-mile run, Wright's in the mile walk, and Merrill's in the bicycle race were all of them so close to the Harvard records that it is safe to say that the records would have gone under more favorable conditions.

The meeting commenced promptly at 2.30, with the two-mile bicycle race, by H. Merrill, '90. the only entry, ridden to break the record of Dean, '88, 6 minutes and 28 seconds. The first mile was 3 minutes and 12 seconds, just two miles, 6 minutes and 31 seconds, just three seconds slower than the previous record. This is a great improvement over the record made last fall. The runners in the first heat of the 100-yards dash were J. W. Merrill, '89, H. R. Miles, '88, E. C. Stowell, '88, G. S. Mandell, '89, There was a close brush for the first place between Merrill and Mandell, which the latter won in 10 3-4 seconds.

The second heat was between W. Myer, '90, E. H. Rogers, '87, and C. M. Keep. M. S. Rogers won easily in 10 1-2 seconds; Myer was second. In the final heat between the winners of first and second places in the trial heats, Rogers won easily in 10 1-4 seconds; Merrill was second. Rogers' time was good, taking into consideration the fact that he ran the whole distance directly against a cold wind.

The entries for the quarter-mile run were, E. Sturgis, '90, S. G. Wells, L. S., R. R. Endicott, '90, A. S. Hardy, '87. Wells won comfortably in the fast time of 51 1-2 seconds. G. P. Cogswell, '88, and F. B. Dana, '88, were the only starters in the half-mile run. Cogswell took the lead and lead to the end. He ran in remarkable form, and came within 1-5 of a second of the record for the distance, his time being 2 minutes 25 seconds.

C. A. Davenport, '90, ran an exhibition mile in 4 minutes and 43 3-4 seconds. He would doubtless have made even better time had their been any one in the event to push him.

The running broad jump was contested by H. B. Gibson, '88, C. N. Cogswell, '88, P. S. Rust, 87, G. H. Brewer, '88, G. Perry, '89, W. Atkinson, '89, Treat, L. S. It proved to be a tiresome event, none of the men making very good records. Cogswell won with a jump of 19 feet 6 inches; Treat was second by 3 inches. The mile walk between E. C. Wright, L. S., and H. H. Bemis, '87, proved to be the closest race of the day. Bemis led at the beginning of the last quarter, but was passed by Wright after a hard struggle. Wright finished in 6 minutes 59 3-4 seconds, with Bemis second by 5 yards. Wright's time was just 1-4 second slower than the Harvard record made by Bemis last Monday - under more favorable weather conditions, by the way. R. G. Leavitt. '89, was in bad form in the pole vault. His best height was 9 feet. E. C. Stowell, '88, P. K. Brown, '90, H. Rogers, '87, J. W. Merrill, '89, ran in the first heat of the 220-yard dash. It was won handily by Rogers in 24 1-2 seconds. The second heat between G. S. Mandell, H. R. Miles, '88, and W. Meyer, '90, was won by Mandell in 24 1-4 seconds. In the final heat, Rogers ran away from his men, and won in 23 1-4 seconds; Mandell was second. Putting the shot and throwing the hammer were both walk-overs for H. B. Gibson, '88. His records were respectively 33 feet 9 inches and 80 feet 8 inches.
