The Class Meetings yesterday afternoon began promptly at 4 o'clock with the
'87 - Mile-Walk - H. H. Bemis, the only contestant, succeeded in making his mile in 6 minutes, 59 1-2 seconds breaking the previous Harvard record of 7 minutes, 1 second, held by E. C. Wright, '86. Bemis walked in excellent form, and his success was the more remarkable on account of a strong east wind, which made good work difficult.
'88 - 440-Yard Dash - The entries were G. B. Cogswell, F. B. Dana and F. B. Lund. Cogswell ran a strong quarter, and won in 52 3-4 seconds, Lund second.
'89 - 440-Yards Dash - The contestants were G. S. Mandell and E. S. Griffing. Mandell won in 54 1-4 seconds.
'90 - 440-Yard Dash - The entries were R. R. Endicott, Jr., W. Myers, E. Sturgis and P. K. Brown. Myer led for the first 220 yards, at a rattling pace, but Endicott passed him on the last turn and won in 53 1-2 seconds. Myer made a plucky race for second place with Sturgis, and fell across the finish line about a foot ahead of him.
'87 - 440-Yard Dash - The entries were E. H. Rogers, A. S. Hardy. Rogers set a very fast pace for the first 220 yards, and won in the excellent time of 52 1-5 seconds.
'88 - Broad Jump - Between G. H. Brewer, C. N. Cogswell and H. B. Gibson. Brewer won with a jump of 19 feet 2 inches.
'89 - Broad Jump - No other contestants appearing, W. Atkinson jumped 19 feet 4 inches.
'90 - Half-Mile Run - C. A. Davenport made 2 minutes, 7 seconds, with no competitors.
An encouraging feature of the meeting was the large number of men who made the quarter mile in between 52 and 54 seconds. Taking this into consideration with Bemis's record in the mile walk, this afternoon may be called highly successful, and one which has materially increased our chances of winning the cup again this year.
