Base-Ball.

HARVARD 11, COCHITUATE 3.

For several years the Cochituate Base-Ball Nine has come up to Cambridge and taken Harvard into camp, but yesterday they met their match. The game was played on Jarvis Field and was interesting from a Harvard point of view, showing that close work could be done by a Harvard nine.

Hunting opened the game with a hit to right-field, which Campbell failed to get to first in time. A passed ball took Hunting to second, a bad throw by Henshaw moved him to third and he came in on another passed ball. Moran and Mahr struck out and Bent flied out to Mumford. For Harvard Wiestling hit safely, Foster got his base on balls and Campbell by an error in left field. Willard hit sharply to short-stop who fumbled and then threw the ball down into the tennis courts and four runs came in. The next three men at the bat were retired in short order.

Up to the fifth inning the Cochituates had failed to make a hit, but in that inning, Bond and Fennessey each struck safely but failed to score, as Boyden struck out Hunting. In the eighth inning Fennessey and Hunting bunched two singles with no one out, but Moran struck out and Fennessey attempted to make third on a throw by Henshaw to Mumford but was put out by Holden, assisted by Mumford. The ninth inning proved a more fortunate one for the visiting team. They obtained two runs on a base hit, and errors by Henshaw and Willard.

Harvard scored in but three innings beside the first. Four runs came in the third inning from singles by Campbell and Henshaw and a three-bagger by Boyden.

The pitching of Boyden throughout the game was commendable. Fourteen men were struck out and not one given his base on balls, while but five hits are credited to the Cochituates. Mumford on second did good work in the field and batted well. Piper struck hard but had hard luck in flying out. It was unfortunate that no opportunity to do some fielding work was not given him. For the Cochituates the honors were carried off by Bond, who proved himself a model out-fielder. Collins caught a muffed ball before it touched the ground and won applause. Mr. Eagan as umpire gave satisfaction, and it was regretted that, struck by a foul ball, he was compelled to retire.
