Appleton Chapel.

The Rev. Brooks Herford of the Arlington-street Unitarian Church, addressed a large audience in Appleton Chapel yesterday evening. The singing by the choir was worthy of a keen appreciation, and the solo of Mr. J. D. Merrill, '89, in the hymn, "Oh! For a Closer Walk with God," was especially well rendered. The text was taken from the 96th Psalm, the 9th verse, "Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." In the old Hebrew usage this was taken in its liberal meaning, and a beautiful dress was considered necessary in worshipping the Lord. The beauty of holiness makes the plainest face look bright and happy; it makes the sick smile, and the old appear as if they had the crown of life. In old age a man's features are moulded by his character and the life he has led. The word holiness was originally wholeness, and without the latter idea joined to the conception of the modern word holiness, half its force is lost. Most men of the present day would rather be called sinners than saints, and what is needed now is spiritual minded men of the world. What purposes can a man fill to better advantage than to enter into the school of Jesus Christ, and ever to press on with high ideas of holiness!
