Four years ago a number of sophomores, of the class of '86, desirous of obtaining better accommodations for trap-shooting than the clubs around Boston afforded, organized the Harvard Shooting Club. From the very first the club was a success. The grounds of the Middlesex Gun Club at Watertown were leased, and meetings were held every week. At first the members contented themselves with shooting for cups and medals offered from time to time by the club. Last year two new features were introduced - matches with outside clubs and an inter-class team match. Two matches were shot in the spring of 1886 with the Dedham Sportsmen Club, in both of which the Harvard team was successful. The inter-class match between four-men teams from the different classes came off on the 20th of May. It was a most exciting match, resulting in a tie between the '86 and '87 teams for first place, '89 next and '88 bringing up the rear. In shooting off the tie, '86 won by the remarkable score of 18 out of 20, their opponents breaking only 11.
Last fall the team shot another match with their old antagonists, the Dedham Club, and were again successful, the score being, Harvard 64, Dedham 46.
The programme arranged by the club for this spring is a most attractive one. Besides the regular weekly shoots, matches have been arranged with several of the gun clubs around Boston, and also with the University of Pennsylvania Gun Club. A challenge has been received from Cornell, and a match may be arranged with that club. Both these colleges have flourishing gun clubs that number among their members many good shots; especially is this true of the Cornell Club, among whose members are Mr. Whitney, the champion trap-shot of New York State, and the White brothers, the crack shots of the Ithaca Gun Club. Our men will have to do good work this spring to be able to win victories over such opponents.
Shooting will be begun by the club next week, and meetings will be held regularly on alternate Thursdays and Fridays. All men who are fond of shot-gun shooting are urged to come and try for places on the team. The following have signified their intententions of becoming candidates: J. A. Frye, L. S.; W. Austin, '87; F. S. Coolidge, '87; Cushing, '87: Mead, '87; Oakes, '87: Palmer, '87; A. C. Smith, '87; M. H. Clyde, '98; J. Austin, '88; Greene, '89; Grew, '89; Walsh, '89, and Barnes, '90.
