Note and Comment.

It has been a very noticeable feature in connection with Yale's part in the annual Yale-Harvard boat-race, that whenever Yale has failed to commence training before Christmas. Yale has failed to win in June.

Realizing this fact, the present management resolved to leave no effort un-made which would strengthen Yale chances next June. Consequently, as soon as the fall races were over and the class crews had disbanded, Captain Stevenson had the candidates for the 'Varsity crew at work.

Most of them were new men, but all are fair oarsmen and some promise to be exceptionally good ones. A meeting of the boating men in college was held recently and the prospects of the coming year were discussed. Captain Stevenson explained his plans for training and laid out work for this fall.

The men will not go into strict traing until after Christmas, but will work more or less every day on the water as long as the harbor is open, and later in the "gym." The candidates are also advised to take part in the hare and hounds runs and be in the open air as much as possible.

After Christmas, work will begin in earnest. The tank which was introduced into the "gym" last year in place of the hydraulic will be used again this year and the same old barge will be placed in position.

Besides rowing in the tank the candidates will exercise on the chest-weights, with Indian clubs and dumb-bells, and take a short run each day.

The most of the men who helped to defeat Harvard last June are still in college. They are Carter, Gill, Stevenson (captain), Wilcox and Woodruff. Caldwell and Rogers are both back, but both positively decline to row. The new men are Cross, '89; Clawson, '89 S.; Wells, '89; Janus, '90; Newell, '90; Burroughs, '89 S., and a number of freshmen. Several of these are foot-ball men and will not commence rowing until the foot-ball season is over.

Ex-Captains Cook and Rogers will assist Captain Stevenson in coaching the crew.- New Haven Uaion.
