The weather last Saturday was all that could be desired for fast time in the various events of the athletic games on Holmes Field. The Harvard record in one event, the bicycle race was lowered by 14 1-2 sec., and Cogswell, '88, came very near breaking the inter-collegiate record in the half-mile. Following is a list of the different entries and names of the winners:-
There was only one entry in the 120yards hurdle race, F. L. H. Noble, '88, who covered the distance in 19 sec.
Following were the entries and handicaps in the 100-yards dash: First heat-J. L. Dodge, '91, 7 yards; E. C. Moen, '91, 1 yard; S. V. R. Crosby, '91, 1 yard; M. Ashe, '88, 5 yards; J. H. Slade, '90, 4 yards; second heat-P. S. Rust, L. S., 5 yards; J. L. Mellen, '90, 6 yards; C. H. Briggs, L. S., 3 yards; L. C. Page, '91, 4 yards; E. B. Bodley, '91, 3 yards; third heat-J. W. Merrill, '89, scratch; J. Wolfe, '90, 4 yards; H. H. Pease, '91, 7 yards; E. A. Darling, '90, 5 yards; J. Stead, '91, 4 yards. In the final heat, Messrs. Ashe, Slade, Rust. Briggs, Merrill and Stead ran. Rust won by about a yard in 10 3-4 sec.
The mile walk was contested by F. E. Zinkeisen, '89, (scratch), J. E. Howe, '91, (40 seconds), S. C. Brackett, '91, (40 seconds), F. W. Burlingham, '91. (1 minute). One minute handicap proved too much for Zinkeisen, who came in about six seconds behind Burlingham. Including his handicap, the latter's time was 8m. 40 sec.
A very pretty race was that in the 440-yards dash. The handicaps were: J. F. Harlow, '88, (25 yards); G. S. Mandell, '89, (10 yards); J. Stead, '91, (25 yards); S. G. Wells, L. S., (scratch); M. L. Bruner, '88, M. Nelson, '91, (40 yards). The men were bunched throughont. Stead crossed the line first, with Wells second, a yard behind. Time, 51 sec.
C. A. Davenport, '90, allowed J. C. Bishop, '91, 125 yards in the mile run, and beat him easily, His time was 4 m. 46s.
The following men entered for the 220-yard dash: E. A. Darling (13 yards), H. H. Pease, '91 (20 yards), M. L. Bruner, '88 (20 yards), F. B. Lund, '88 (scratch), E. C. Moen, '91 (13 yards), J. L. Dodge, '91 (20 yards), L. C. Page, '91 (15 yards), T. T. Seelye, '88, (18 yards), J. H. Slade, '90 (12 yards), S. V. R. Crosby, '91 (10 yards), E. R. Bodley, '91 (12 yards). Slade soon secured the lead and won by about 4 feet over Lund, second, in 23 1-2s.
The half-mile run was contested by R. R. Endicott, Jr., '90 (15 yards), H. R. Miles, '88 (15 yards), F. B. Dana, 88 (scratch), G. P. Cogswell, '88 (scratch). Cogswell won after a hot race in the time of 2m. 4-5s.
R. S. Hale, '91 (scratch), S. N. Bell, '91 (scratch), J. B. Alexander, '90 (3 inches), F. B. Winthrop, '91 (4 inches), appeared for the running high jump. Hale won with a jump of 5ft. 3 3-4 in. Winthrop covered 4ft. 11 1-2 in., and got second place.
Putting the shot was won by H. B. Gibson, '88, who put it 31 ft. 5in. G. B. Hunter, '89, was second best, with a put of 29ft. 9 in.
The running broad jump was contested by C. N. Cogswell, '88 (scratch), R. G. Leavitt, '89 (6 inches), R. S. Hale, '91 (12 inches), G. W. Wheelwright, '90 (12 inches), F. Mason, '91 (12 inches); J. Wolf, '90 (10 inches). The cup was given to Wolf, who cleared 18 ft. 1-2 inch. Wheelwright took second prize, with a jump of 18ft. 5 3-4 inches.
Gibson, '88, threw the hammer 83 ft. 1 in, and won this event. Hunter was second.
The entries for the pole vault were: R. G. Leavitt, '89, (scratch,) G. W. Wheelwright, '90 (six inches), R. S. Hale, '91 (12 inches), F. Mason, '91 (15 inches), J. Crane, Jr., '90 (18 inches). Crane won with a vault of 10 ft.
O. H. Davis, '91, lowered the Harvard record in the two-mile bicycle race from 6m. 183-4s, to 6m. 2 1-2s, K. Brown, '91, was second in this event by about 3 feet, with the assistance of a liberal handicap.
