Last year, a year so fertile in mishaps for us, lacrosse was the only sport in which Harvard maintained her superiority over her rivals. Indeed the lacrosse championship has remained here for three years, and bids fair to remain here still another year, if the college gives this branch of athletics the support which its perseverance deserves.
There was a decided interest manifested by the students in the lacrosse match games last spring, but although this attention encouraged the team greatly, still the pecuniary aid must also be increased if the college does not wish the game to die out.
Under Captain Peabody's able management, last year's team won every league game, defeating the opponents without losing a single goal. The following are the scores in the three championship games:-
Harvard, 3 goals; Princeton, 0 goals.
" 7 " Stevens, 0 "
" 4 " N. Y. Univ., 0 "
Princeton, as will be remembered by those who witnessed the game last year, had a very strong team, and it was only by the hardest work that our team prevented it from carrying away the championship. This year the contest will be even more doubtful, both because Princeton, our most formidable opponent, will retain most of her old team, and because we have lost several of our best players. Of last year's team there still remain, Davidson, '88; Fowle, '88; Blake, '88; Griffing, '89; Harding, '89, and Morton, '90.
Now with these to start on, it ought not to be difficult to fill the other six positions and there is no reason to suppose, that Harvard's record in lacrosse this year, will not be as creditable as that of last year, provided the college lends its support.
