Yesterday afternoon the Harvard lacrosse team, after a hotly played contest, defeated by a score of 1 to 0 the Independents of Boston. The Independents show a great lack of training, and moreover they did not play together well, but still they played with vim, and their individual play was at times brilliant.
Mr. Davis placed the ball at about half past four o'clock.
The first half was closely contested at the beginning; towards the close, our defence kept the ball at the other end of the field most of the time, but our attack was unable to score, partly on account of the wild shooting from too far away from goal, partly on account of the fine defence play of the Independents. The close of the half found the visitors pretty well used up, with the score 0 to 0.
On the opening of the second half, the Independents began a purely defensive game. All of their strong men were placed in the defence field, and as the half advanced, the whole team worked down the field and huddled around their goal. The defense players were left entirely uncovered and returned the ball without opposition. Our attack drew off well and secured the ball, but the shooting was not accurate. The Harvard defence kept feeding the ball to the attack and the attack kept shooting. The Independents had more difficulty every minute in keeping the ball away from their posts. At one time there was only one Independent on our side of centre. But their exertions were not sufficient, each try was nearer, and finally Hood passed in to Blodgett who swiped a goal five seconds before time was called.
Our defence had very little to do after the first ten minutes. The attack did very well in the second half when they had to fight against ten out of twelve of the opposing team. Hood and Dudley were particularly active in securing the ball for Harvard. Hagan of the Independents played a very skillful game.
The teams were as follows:
