The Amherst College class of 1836 commemorates this year the fiftieth anniversary of its graduation. Some of the names on its list are noteworthy. Its salutatorian was the late Governor Alexander H. Bullock. The Rev. Dr. Hitchcock, president of the Union Seminary, New York city, Justices Kellogg and Doolittle, respectively of the supreme courts of Vermont and New York, Dr. Nathan Allen of Lowell, and other men who have made their mark, are numbered among "the boys" of '86.
Such anniversaries remind the nation of the debt it owes its country colleges.
