With the advent of the boating season one topic of discussion recurs which ought to engage the attention of all who feel an interest in boating. Mention has frequently been made that Harvard, despite her great athletic spirit, is sadly lacking in an individual interest in boating. The students while taking an interest in the 'varsity and class crews, do not feel a personal enthusiasm for rowing as an exercise and as a sport. It has been recommended in the past that a single scull contest should be instituted to rouse the students to a more active interest in rowing. This contest, if instituted, could also present an admirable means for training a large number of rowers who could act as an auxiliary force to the regular crews. Such a plan, while offering some difficulties, it is true, in the matter of shells, could not fail to reach more students than the present plan of exclusive crews. And in so far as it broadened, would improve one of our most popular sports.
