It is encouraging to note the general abandonment of exact numerical values for the examination returns in many courses. The recitation work, attendance, etc., of the half year are especially in a number of freshman courses, being carefully included in the returns, and the whole given out in terms of "excellent," "good," or "bad," as the case may be. While our marking system as a whole is in a somewhat chaotic state, and while our examinations are frequently valueless in the determination of work done, these attempts can be of only limited importance, but they show the spirit which is working for the final good, and should make us feel that we still have a place in the march of progress.
