The following taken from the Yale News shows that the college has hopes of winning the Mott Haven cup next spring. "The following statement in regard to the number of winners of first or second place in the inter-collegiate games last year, who are undergraduates at Yale and Harvard will to a certain extent make plain the chance each college has of winning the cup next spring. There is a reasonable probability that a winner last year, if still qualified to enter, will also be successful this year.
For Harvard, the 220 and 440 yards dashes were won by W. Baker, '86; the broad jump by J. D. Bradley, '86; and the tug-of-war; H. H. Bemis, '87, was second in the one mile walk; F. L. Dean, '88, second in two mile bicycle race; Gibson. '88, second in throwing the hammer; D. C. Clark, '85, second in putting the shot.
For Yale, L. B. Hamilton, '86, won the bicycle race; W. H. Ludington, '87, the hurdle race; and A. B. Coxe, '87, throwing the hammer.
It is seen that Harvard has three first prize and four second prize men still in college, in addition to their tug-of war team, while Yale has only three first prize men. From this it would seem that Harvard's chances were far better than Yale's, if it were not for the fact that Yale will this year increase her strength by sending more men. By doing this Yale can win several second prizes which, together with the probability that another first prize will be taken, gives her a fair show.
