Each year there arises a discussion as to the value of substituting one hour examinations for the regular mid-year three hour examination. We are glad to see that the custom seems to gain increasing favor. It is easily understood what a relief this custom proves when the subjects for examination require extended preparation. It is almost impossible for a man to do himself justice in any one course, when he is forced by the enormous work necessary for a satisfactory preparation in four. Again, there can be little doubt that frequent and thorough reviews are highly beneficial in fixing a subject firmly. The hurry and superficial work of the period of the mid-years has become proverbial. Anything which serves to relieve both students and instructors at that time cannot be too highly praised.
