FRESHMAN ATHLETIC MEETING.

The freshman field sports took place this afternoon in a drizzling ram. The track, which in the beginning was in good condition, became muddy before the end of the races. Nevertheless, the sports as a whole were creditable, and the record in the half mile was very fast. The first event was the

HURDLE RACE.W. S. Crane won in 22 2 5 seconds. He was the only man to run through the hundles without accident. H. O. Poor fell, but picking himself up, beat R. Le B. Lynch who stopped to take a fresh start.

The trial heats of the hundred yards dash were won, the first by W. Myer in 11 seconds, and the second by P. K. Browne in 11 1-2 seconds. G. R. Payson and J. Wolfe were second in these heats. The final heat was won-by P. K. Browne in 11 seconds, with Wolfe a good second.

But one contestant appeared for the quarter-mile run, E. Sturgis. He covered the distance without attempting to make fast time.

The half-mile run was by far the best event of the day. Both R. R. Endicott, Jr., and H. F. Strout ran gamely and well. Endicott finished in the fast time of 2 minutes, 10 seconds, with Strout not far behind.

The mile run lost-its interest in the fourth lap when G. P. McNichol dropped from behind J. D. Gorham. The latter won in 5 minutes, 27 seconds.

A. B. Grover was the only contestant in the mile walk. His time was 9 minutes, 32 seconds.

Prizes in the running high jump were taken by Codman and Lothrop. They jumped 4 feet 10 1-2 inches, and 4 feet 10 inches respectively.

In the broad jump, Lothrop was again second with a jump of 17 feet 7 1-2 inches. This event was won by Wheelwright with a jump of 18 feet 4 inches.

The 220 yards dash was awarded to P. K. Browne, who ran in 25 3-4 seconds. W. Myer was second.

R. E. Faulkner put the shot 31 feet 1 1-2 inches, and won the event with G. H. Dickerman second.

The pole vault was won by W. S. Crane with a vault of 7 feet 6 3-4 inches.

G. H. Merrill, the only contestant in the two-mile bicycle race, rode an exhibition in 7 minutes 13 seconds.
