YALE'S ADVANCE.

To the current number of the New Englander Mr. Henry C. Kingsley, treasurer of the College, contributes an article entitled "Yale Under President Porter's Administration." The paper shows that a very gradual advance has been made in all departments since Dr. Porter's accession. In 1871, when he was elected, the number of students was 809. At the end of the first five years of his term the average enrollment each year was 950; for the second five years it was 1,028, and for the third five years including 1885, it was 1,078. This year's catalogue has 1,076 names, a gain of 26 per cent. over the showing of 1871. For the three periods, the average each year in the Academic Department was 535, 583, and 593.

In 1871 there were 71 instructors, of which number 57 were professors and tutors and 14 were lecturers and assistants. Now there are 114 instructors, of whom 89 are classed as professors and tutors.

The funds of the academical department show an increase of about 40 per cent. In 1871 they amounted to $689-677, and in 1885 to $960,257. Since 1871 $350,000 have been added to the university funds, which now amount to $485,493. The funds of the Theological Department have increased $188,523, or about 75 per cent.
