Next year, when the conference committee is established on a working basis, there will be many sadly needed reforms which we hope it will begin to consider. Not the least among these is a reform of the marking system, or rather, perhaps, its abolishment and the substitution of some other system of marking. At present, it is acknowledged by all, that the best men do not always get the highest rank, and, in the case of the recipients of scholarships, not always the most deserving men get the highest scholarships. The evils of the marking system are many and great, its advantages few and insignificant. The faculty, we understand, are by a large majority in favor of a change, and all that is needed is a little agitation of the question from the students side to inaugurate the reform. There is little doubt that, with careful thought, a system could be devised answering the desired purpose much better than the present system.
