The first game of Cricket for both the Harvard and Longwood Cricket teams occurred Saturday on the Longwood grounds. Both were good representative teams, and the Longwood Club were much assisted by Chambers their professional, and Geo. Wright. Objection was made to Chambers, but he was allowed to play on condition that he would not bowl. The game began shortly after 11 A.M. with Longwood at the bat, and was continued until 4.30 P.M. with an intermission for lunch. The ground was soft and soggy on account of the heavy rain the day before, and there was a strong wind blowing across the wicket, so that the conditions were by no means good for fine batting and large scores. In consequence, the score on both sides was low. At one time it looked very much as if Harvard would win, Evans, and Clark being at the bat, both hitting very well, and the score being 37 for 3 wickets. The bowling of Wright, however, was too much for them, and both were soon out. The best work for Harvard was done by Mr. Evans and Mr. Clark in batting, and by Mr. Smith. '88, and Mr. Clark in bovling. The wicket keeping of Mr. Evans was excellent. For Longwood, over half the score was made by Chambers and Geo. Wright. Chambers' 35 in the second inning was very well earned. The match resulted in the defeat of Harvard, 104 to 74 on the total score. Appended is the score by innings.
