HARVARD, 3; BROWN, 1.Our first championship game with Brown has resulted in a victory for Harvard, although the game was much closer than the exhibition game had led us to expect. With the exception of a few inexcusable muffs our nine played a good game; the work of both batteries was exceptionally good.
Beaman opened up at the bat by hitting a fly to Chase, which the latter muffed. He stole second and third, and came home on a hit by Tilden. Nichols went out on a foul tip which Clark turned into a double play by throwing to first and putting out Tilden, who had attempted to steal second. Allen then got in a base hit which was followed by Willard's getting out at first.
For Brown, Chase and Hutchinson struck out, while Seagrave managed to hit the ball as far as the pitcher and was put out at first. Harvard opened the second inning with a score by Smith, who, after making a base hit, stole second and came home on a wild throw to third base. Jones then knocked a ball to the third, but was thrown out at first, while Edgerly struck out. Winslow got his first on a muff by Chase, but was left on base by Beaman's put out at first. Clark was the only Brown man who saw first in the second inning, and that on a muffed fly to Winslow. He was put out while attempting to steal second. In the next inning Harvard went out in one two-three order, knocking flies respec tively to short stop, left fielder and third base. It was in this inning that Brown gained her solitary score through Rhett, who knocked a high fly to centre field, which Jones muffed. Wadsworth and Cooper then struck out, the latter's third strike being muffed by Allen, which gave Rhett second base. Chase then put in a timely base hit which brought in Rhett.
The fourth and fifth innings were short, as most of the men on both sides went out on three strikes. Nichols got a base hit in the sixth inning, stole second, and came home on Allen's and Willard's put-outs, thus making an earned run. The last three innings were exciting, each side having men on bases several times. That no scores were made was due to the fine work of both pitchers. Outside of the battery work Smith played best for Harvard, while Rhett fielded best for Brown.
