Clippings from the required English work are often amusing in their nature, but seldom equal to the following which is taken from a speech by one of our United States senators: "When this committee is formed I hope that the committee will go at this question of the Senate employees with reference to a desire only to discharte honestly the obligation which the Senate as a body owes to the country in regard to that control which it asserts concerning the expenditures of public money with reference to matters which are pertinent, either to the convenience of Senators or the despatch of public business in which the Senate is concerned."
