The Yale Nine.

CANDIDATES FOR POSITIONS UPON IT.

For over a month there have been twenty-seven aspirants for places in the Yale University nine. There are three squads in steady practice. Terry, '85, second base of the '84 nine and captain of the '85 nine, will very likely retain his old position. Lux, '88, was the catcher on the freshman team last fall, and though he has recently broken a finger through his steady playing, will probably retain his old position. Sheppard, '87, was left field on his class nine, and is trying for a similar position on the university, which he stands a fair chance of gaining. Morse, '87, was change catcher on his class team, and may secure a position as fielder on the nine. Shipman, '86, has held no regular position on any college nine, but is showing up well, and is a favorite candidate for the position of third base, made vacant by the graduation of Hopkins, '84. Bremner, '86, caught on his class nine and played centre field and change catcher on last year's university nine, and is the most promising candidate for catcher on this year's nine. Marsh, '87, has played in his class nine, and is looked upon by many as having a fair chance for the university nine. J. Oliver, '85, played short-stop on last year's university team, and will secure his old position or exchange it for third base. Stewart, '86, played first base last year, and will again cover that position. Hickox, '87, was change pitcher on the '87 nine, and stands a good show for the same position on the university, as he is developing finely under the training of D. A. Jones. Odell, '86, secured a good reputation by his pitching during the Harvard tie game at Brooklyn in June. He is troubled with a lame arm, however, which may hurt his prospects somewhat. Morely, '86, was in the field of his class nine, and stands a chance for the same position in the university nine. Dutcher, '86, has creditably occupied third base in his class nine, and wants to go on the college team in like capacity. D. Winston, '86, has creditably filled third base, and wishes to go in the university field. Lang, '85, S. S. S., has played in class championship games, and is a leading candidate for the field, and Merrill, '85, has played both in class and field, and is a cool player.

The present training does not forbid tobacco or spirits, and only the ordinary rules of training will be enforced. Yale hopes to make a good showing this season.
