The word "News" is not as many imagine, derived from the word "new," but from the initial letters of the cardinal points of the compass. It was a common practice in former years (between 1595 and 1730) to put over the periodical publications of the day, the initial letters of the cardinal points of the compass thus:
N-W-S-E implying that the papers contained intelligence from the four quarters of the globe; and from this practice is derived the word newspaper.-[Yale News.
