The Yale Nine.

The candidates for the Yale nine have settled down to hard work; stricttraining has begun which will be continued until the championship series is over. An idea of where the nine stands and what its prospects are for the coming season, will not be out of place. Five men of the nine who won the championship last spring still remain; Terry, 2b. and captain; Stewart, 1b.; Oliver s. s.; Bremner, c. f., and Odell, p. The men who have left are, Hopkins, 3b.; Brigham, l. f.; McKee, r. f.; Souther, c.; and Booth, who pitched in the first games, until he was found useless in the Harvard-Yale game of June 21. Of the men who remain, Terry, Stewart and Oliver, and probably Odell, will retain their old positions. Bremner is a candidate for catcher. There are four other men trying for this place, Merrill and Gaom of '85, Morse, '87, and Lux, '88. Goodwin, who caught so pluckily for '87 last year, was considered a good candidate, but has recently left college. Besides Odell there are two other men trying for pitcher, Hickox, who pitched in both the freshman games with Harvard, and Atwood, '85. substitute pitcher for the nine last year. These men are under the care of D. A. Jones, '84, the professional pitcher. For third base there are two candidates, Williams, '85, and Lyons of the Shef. School. The latter was at Columbia last year and captained the nine of that college. Finally there are several more candidates for the outfield.
