To one who has seen the beautiful and expensive experiments in freshman chemistry, the thought would seem absurd that the authorities could possibly fail to vote sufficient appropriations for the scientific departments of the university. Yet the appropriation for carrying on work in the physical laboratory is unreasonably inadequate to the demand made on it. Although we possess one of the finest physical laboratories in the world, the appropriation this year for carrying on the work was only a few hundred dollars. In the study of physics delicate and accurate instruments are absolutely necessary. Many instruments in the laboratory are in so wretched a condition that although the student may make the most exact calculations, he can feel sure that his results will not be correct. It is not even now too late to make an additional appropriation. The success of our physical studies demands that better opportunities should be afforded the student than he can at present enjoy.
