The members of the new conference committee met for the first time yesterday afternoon, and every member was present. The faculty is represented by the committee that was appointed last year to meet the students in regard to the formation of this conference, viz.: Professors Palmer (chairman), Shaler, James, Ass't. Professor Croswell and Mr. Wendell. The student delegates are as follows: From '86, Huddleston, Merriam, Phillips, R. D. Smith, Vogel; from '87, F. S. Coolidge, Furber, Herron, Peabody; from '88, Garrison, Lund, E. R. Thayer.

The first business was the election of two members at large from the college. Adams, '88, and Houghton, '86, were chosen in that capacity.

The main question that was brought forward by the chairman was, whether students could fill the positions of proctors. Various views were expressed by the different members of the committee. No decision, however, was reached, and the matter was referred for further thought.

It was voted to instruct the chairman to appoint a committee of three to conduct a correspondence with the more prominent colleges in regard to the methods of marking pursued. The information so obtained will be used as a basis for devising an improved method for Harvard. Messrs. Merriam, Coolidge and Garrison, were appointed on this committee.

The committee then adjourned until the first Wednesday in December.
