EDITORS DAILY CRIMSON: For the benefit of the new members of the university, and of many other members who seem to need information, I wish to say a few words about the Harvard Total Abstinence League. The object of the society is to "discourage intemperance in drinking": not, as many suppose, freshman punches. The idea in the minds of the founders of the league was that in college where there are so many temptations to intemperance, there should be an opportunity given to those who fear the dangers, or wish to add their influence to the cause, of allying themselves with some temperance organization. The principle is that a man will be much more likely to do what he purposes, if he is united with others and has his name published as having such a purpose, than if he is alone. The pledge is binding only during connection with the university, or with the society.

As the names of members must be sent to the Index in a few days, those who are intending to join are urged to do so of once. It is the duty of every temperance man in college to support the League.

The secretary will be at 11 College House, from 12 to 12.30 every day this week, to give an opportunity of joining the league to all who desire it.

A. T. DUDLEY, Sec. H. T. A. L.
