Yesterday was the first day of the tennis tournament, and as the day was perfect for the game quite a large number of sets were played. The second round of singles was played, and the doubles were begun. Sears vs. Mills, 6-1, 6-1; Kuhn vs. Tilton, 6-1, 6-1; Hallowell vs. Mackay, 6-2, 6-3; Newell vs. Sternbergh, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2; Federhen vs. Keasbey, 6-0, 6-2; Hamlin vs. Clarke, 6-2, 6-1; Snow vs. Howes, 6-1, 6-4; Shepard vs. Moore by default; Cram vs. Zerega, 6-1, 6-3. Second round, Lord vs. Bowen, 6-1, 6-3; P. S. Sears vs. Kuhn, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; Hallowell vs. Newell, 6-4, 6-2; Snow vs. Shepard, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; Bancroft vs. Cram, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1; Lee vs. Mackay, 6-2, 6-1. Two matches not played. Third round, P. S. Play will be continued to-day, beginning at 10 o'clock, and all players are requested to be on hand promptly as the management wishes that the tournament be finished without any tedious delay. It is expected that the tournament will be nearly finished by night.
