But we urge every student to be constantly on the alert to prevent just such accidents as the one of yesterday morning. A very little carelessness on the part of one man may bring terrible results upon a score of his fellow undergraduates. A student rooming in one of the large dormitories in the yard is absolutely at the mercy of the men around him. As the weakest link in a chain must be taken as the measure of its strength, so must the safety of a hundred students be computed on the basis of the habits of the most heedless in their number. A carelessly built fire; a thoughtless oversight of an open gas jet; either cause may send the CRIMSON into black leads for a dozen ives needlessly thrown away. Nor can all the blame be laid upon a single man if the fire that must yet come pens up a half-dozen men in a blazing building. Fire escapes have been asked for, and the authorities have refused them. Any loss of life from lack of them that may occur will surely be charged to the proper account.
