FRESHMAN LACROSSE.

YALE DEFEATS HARVARD, 2 TO 1.

The freshman lacrosse twelve on Saturday went to New Haven and played the first freshman game against Yale. The team arrived in New Haven considerably tired, and had to eat dinner at once and rush out to the park. For these reasons their play at first, was lax, and the men failed to cover properly, letlay at first, was lax, and the men failed to cover properly, letting the Yale men run around them. In consequence the ball was kept dangerously near to the Harvard goal, and after about fifteen minutes play, the first goal for Yale was thrown by Pennell. The Harvard freshmen still continued to play rather loosely, and at the end of thirty-five minutes from the first facing, Yale scored a second goal. The ball was soon in play again, and a wonderful improvement began to show itself in the play of the Harvard men. They seemed limbered up and played by far better than they have ever done in practice. Several fine plays were made, and in a few minutes Gardner threw a goal. This considerably encouraged them, and the ball was kept at the Yale goal most of the time. Several shots were made for goals but the throwing was a little wild so that no more balls went through. The game was called before time was up to enable the Harvard team to catch the train home. This was a mistake, as they were clearly out-playing their opponents. During the first part of the game, Drake made some fine plays as goal keeper. The feature of the game was a fine high catch made by Abbot, literally taking the ball away from two Yale men. Blake's throwing very accurate, and Henning, Giddings, and Oglesby did finely, while Furber made two brilliant rushes. The Yale men ran well, but checked poorly, in the latter respect being easily surpassed by the Harvard twelve. Herron, Blodgett, Rogers and Adams were all unable to go which weakened the team somewhat, and it reflects great credit on the freshmen that they had so large a field of players to select from and still present a good twelve. The players were: goal, Drake; point, Carmalt; cover point, Henning; defense field, Furber, Oglesby, and Blake; Centre, E. S. Abbot (Captain); attack field, Grinsted, Giddings and Sumner; second home, Gardner; first home, A. T. Dudley. The Harvard umpire was Pastorious, 87.
