W. G. George of the Mosely harriers, beat the amateur two-mile record (his own, 9m. 25 3-5s), at a late meeting of the London Athletic Club. Starting at the scratch against 25 competitors, he ran the distance in 9m. 17 3-5s.

For the freshman examination in Chemistry, the men have been allotted as follows: Abbot to Endicott, Mass 1; Faulkner to Kuhn, Mass 3; Litchfield to Lumner, Sever 37; Talbot to Linkeisen, U. E. R.; conditioned men, U. E. R. Special students alphabetically with the rest.

The treatment which the freshmen met with at Exeter was in marked contrast with that which they received at Andover. At the former place every possible politeness was shown to the team on both its visits there, while at the latter their treatment was far from the best.

President Porter of Yale says: "As far as Yale is concerned athletics are doing well. They do not divert the interest of the student, nor do they diminish the zeal for culture as a whole. The student is improved by the slight diversion of attention which they afford."

In the first round of the singles in the tennis tournament, Warren beat Bacon, Peabody beat Codman, Rhinelander beat Edgar, Wheelwright beat Pierson, Mandell beat White, Sawin beat Curtis and Andrews beat Thompson. In the second round, Mandell beat Peabody, Warren beat Sawin, Andrews beat Rhinelander, Wheelwright had a bye. In the third round, Warren beat Wheelwright. In the doubles, Andrews and Keep beat Gardner and Kimball.

At Manchester, England, Recently, a tennis match was played between Heathcote, the English amateur champion and Thomas Pettitt, the American champion, with the following result: First set, Heathcote, six games to four. Second set. Pettitt six games to three. Third set, Pettitt six games to none. Fourth set, Pettitt, six games to two; thus the American champion was the victor by three sets to one.
