HARVARD VS. ANDOVER ACADEMY.The university nine went to Andover yesterday to play with the academy boys, and defeated them easily by the score of 14 to 2. The reason why the nine challenged Andover was to get the practice of playing against such a fine pitcher as Vinton is reputed to be. They did not find any difficulty in hitting him, the batting being very free. The Harvard nine naturally out-fielded their opponents and made but five errors. They blanked Andover in every inning but the fifth, when Andover succeeded in earning two runs. The runs for Harvard were wade mostly in the third and fifth innings, when the men seemed to fathom Vinton's curves, and regular streaks of batting ensued. For Harvard, Tilden, LeMoyne, Baker and Coolidge, led at the bat, and Nichols, Coolidgeidge and Smith in fielding. Noyes batted well for Andover, and Stearns, Beckwith and Vinton led in the field. The pitching of Nichols was very steady and effective, ten men being struck out and but six hits being made off him, and yet it has been said that Andover has as heavy a batting nine this year as Mary colleges.
